The SCALE project aims to enable and facilitate the mass deployment of electric vehicles (EVs) and the accompanying smart charging infrastructure. To do so, SCALE systematically assesses customer expectations, identifying EV users’ preferences, existing obstacles and potential incentives to charge smartly, and prepares an open smart charging and V2X ecosystem that equally benefits users, cities and regions, businesses and society at large. SCALE brings together leading research and innovation initiatives and smart charging demonstration testbeds from across Europe, building upon existing technologies, standards and protocols as much as possible and focusing on the research and development of missing or incomplete elements. The consortium covers the entire value chain, including leading European OEMs, DSOs/TSOs, CPOs, e-mobility service providers, public authorities, research and knowledge partners, EV user associations and European networks. SCALE develops the technological, regulatory, organisational and legal readiness needed for a mass market and initiates a Joint European Procurement for V2X chargers based on open standards, run by five European cities, while the Open V2X Alliance ensures the project’s legacy beyond its lifetime.

ITI-CERTH contributes, together with the City of Utrecht and Utrecht University, to the development of the Integrated EV Mobility and Energy Planning Tool, adapting its in-house tools (a grid simulator and the Smart Charging and Storage Platform – SCSP) using empirical results from the Utrecht use case, in order to quantify, for different EV and V2G penetration scenarios, the peak-shaving capabilities of V2G and the related societal costs and benefits. In addition, ITI contributes to the energy impact assessment of the demonstration activities, through a normalised benchmarking framework and reduced-order algorithms embedded in the monitoring platform, which use energy flow data streams (electricity, heating/cooling, storage) to assess indicators such as efficiency, autonomy and energy flexibility. Finally, ITI contributes to simulating the mass deployment of V2X, through grid modelling and power system stability studies addressing the impact on distribution grids, ancillary service requirements and the contribution of V2G to frequency stability.
