Bio-waste has received special attention internationally due to its environmental, economic and social impacts. The characteristics of this flow are based on high biodegradability, which makes it difficult to manage them. More problems arise in cases such as Mediterranean countries (e.g. Greece & Cyprus), where bio-waste is at 40% and at the same time occur high temperatures throughout the year.

Within the framework of the relevant national and community regulatory frameworks, the objective of the cross-border cooperation proposal between Greece and Cyprus BIOMA is to develop a sustainable approach to the management of biowaste in decentralized areas by developing innovative management techniques related to efficient Biodegradability in the areas concerned (i.e. the Palodia Community and the Municipality of Naxos and the Small Cyclades) and then processing them using innovative technologies.

The beneficiaries of the partnership are 5 partners from Greece and Cyprus. All partners combine their knowledge and experience to achieve the goals of the project. ITI has a significant research activity in the project-related areas of signal processing, data analysis and visualization, as well as the design and implementation of IT systems.

The cross-border cooperation of stakeholders, therefore, with their common added value, with reference to the development needs and capabilities of these areas, will help Greece and Cyprus as countries with many common characteristics, contributing dynamically not only to achieving of the targets for sustainable management of biowaste in the two EU Member States, but also to establish them as the pole of sustainable development in the wider area of the South East Mediterranean.
