The Smart2B layered modular architecture comprises four main layers (building assets, integration/knowledge, functional services, and users) which are compliant with existing standardized architectures such as Reference Architecture Model Industry 4.0, Industrial Data Space Reference Architecture or Industrial Internet Consortium Reference Architecture. The Smart2B open modular software/hardware architecture supports: (i) seamless integration of heterogeneous appliances, devices and BEMSs; (ii) knowledge extraction for situation-aware user interaction and engagement, and building performance assessment; (iii) Smart2B multi-criteria management services, capable of innovative and effective consolidation and optimization of energy efficiency, flexibility, and personalized user comfort in residential and non-residential buildings; and (iv) user friendly interfaces for facilitating the access and engagement of citizens, occupants, building managers and electrical grid operators. This architecture enables transparent, end-to-end, bidirectional interaction between actors, smart software services, building automation equipment, and smart appliances with emphasis on elaborate monitoring and energy management systems. Smart2B is based on four main pillars:

> Smart2B devices & building interface allows for seamless connection of complex and heterogeneous building energy systems comprising not-yet-connected devices, smart appliances and upgraded legacy appliances as well as IoT interfaces and gateways.

> The Smart2B platform & APIs are a community-enabled smart readiness platform that serves as the middle layer of the Smart2B system that enables seamless integration, knowledge extraction and control.

> The Smart2B services, that use AI and machine learning algorithms to analyse and prepare the building and user data collected from the Smart2B devices, consolidating and optimizing the various Smart2B objectives through newly developed, modular APIs.

> The Smart2B user interaction, client engagement and social innovation, that involves and engages the multiple stakeholders (occupants, building managers, communities, system operators) through mobile apps and web-based applications as well as gamification. Smart2B relies on three important software design principles: separation of concepts across abstraction layers and modular architecture; user-centred development; and the security of data and privacy of users at all levels integrated in a vertical cross layer.

CERTH ITI has a leading role in the Smart2B services layer, where AI tools for air infectivity and maintenance works forecasting, alongside with cost-efficient microgrid management are foreseen. Moreover, an advisor to improve SRI levels will be collaboratively built with VITO. CERTH ITI is also leading the activities on ontological modelling, semantic annotation, and data quality in the Smart2B platform layer. Finally, CERTH ITI is responsible to develop and maintain the web presence channels of the project.
