Green Maintenance and Life Cycle Asset Management are part of the four basic pillars for sustainable growth. They contribute to asset productivity, energy saving, safer labor condition and reduction of environmental accidents. Already, many developed economies have invested in Maintenance policies with remarkable results.

Throughout the world, the main problem in implementing these Maintenance Policies has been the shortage of a skilled workforce. This problem is more severe in the Program Area due to National Policies in force.

In the MainCODE project, a partnership comprised of 5 Greek and 3 Bulgarian partners, will undertake to implement a Total Approach for Regional Maintenance Policies. Three academic institutions (two universities and one research center) will provide their research experience, three Business Chambers will connect the results of the project with the actual market needs, one Maintenance Society and one Municipal Enterprise will provide their knowledge on Maintenance issues.

The main objectives of the project are

a) The elaboration of a sustainable lifelong Training program by developing targeted training material, organizing a series of seminars and workshops and implementing innovative e-learning tools. All of the activities will focus on the following three main thematic areas: Asset Management & Maintenance Technologies, Health-Safety & Environment and Green Maintenance & Energy Saving.

b) To increase workforce mobility and promote equal opportunities, by creating a Certification System for skilled technicians and developing a shared web-based database.

c) To create innovative Maintenance systems for all stakeholders. The academic institutions will develop a state of the art e-maintenance tool for performing maintenance operations and offering on-the-job training and support.

d) To establish a permanent link between the stakeholders in order to develop and implement the regional strategy on Maintenance.

The output of the MainCODE project will be implemented in four pilot projects in order to evaluate their effectiveness, and present them to all stakeholders. Furthermore, a broad dissemination plan will be executed through six conferences and workshops. Another objective of this project will be the establishment of permanent institutions for the future sustainability of the project.

Considering the ongoing economic crisis, all stakeholders should be more than willing to adopt and implement the proposed Maintenance Policies. The successful implementation of this project, beyond improving the skill of the regional workforce, should also set the foundation for a competitive economic zone, attractive for national and international investments.
