EXTRA-BRAIN aims to develop a new generation of explainable and trustworthy artificial intelligence solutions based on brain-inspired neural networks, capable of operating across diverse application domains and data environments. The project addresses key limitations of current AI approaches—such as limited generalisation, high dependence on annotated data, and high computational and energy costs—by adopting a brain-like design grounded in computational neuroscience principles. Through innovative models, data optimisation pipelines, and explainability frameworks, EXTRA-BRAIN seeks to enable efficient, flexible, and energy-aware AI deployment across the edge-cloud continuum. The framework will be validated across a range of use cases with varying hardware and real-world constraints, paving the way for more sustainable and human-centric AI systems.

CERTH/ITI (Centre for Research and Technology Hellas / Information Technologies Institute) plays a key technical and research role in the EXTRA-BRAIN project, contributing to the development and validation of advanced brain-inspired AI methodologies. In particular, CERTH focuses on designing and implementing novel AI models, supporting data optimisation processes to enhance data quality and efficiency, and contributing to the development of explainable and trustworthy AI mechanisms. Through its work, CERTH helps ensure that the proposed solutions are robust, scalable, and suitable for deployment across heterogeneous edge-cloud environments, addressing real-world performance, energy, and reliability constraints.
