The objective of eNTERFACE is the development of new methods for the natural man-machine interaction that will be based in new methods for detecting human body movements, i.e. hands head and legs, so that we can have as close to natural interaction of the user with a cooperative virtual reality environment (VR).

In recent years there is a worldwide increase in the use of virtual reality environments and the deployment of fascinating applications in the fields of entertainment, education and navigation. As history shows us no matter how fascinating and realistic is the VR application it can not be realistic without the natural interaction with the user. Multimodal interfaces not only provide the means of such natural interaction but also provide the capability of communicating with the VR environment in more than one ways. Αs natural multimodal interfaces speech, hand movements, body movements, haptic interaction, facial expressions and recently physiology signals (i.e. electroencephalogram, electromiogram etc ) have been used.

For this project advanced methods for the natural man-machine interaction will be developed that will use voice commands of the user and information from his hand and body movements during the simulation. This new interaction method will be completed in a cooperative virtual reality environment for the implementation of realistic virtual reality simulations.

Goals of the project are:

Development of image processing core technology for the retrieval of information of the location of human body members.

The unified approach of the two mediums image and body movements for the development of natural interaction in which the user performs operations with the use of hand movements and voice commands.

Development of applications for testing the operation of the interactions and the systems that will be developed for the project.
