As of today, enterprise premises remain the largest source of CO2 emissions in urban environments. They constitute energy intensive systems through their whole life cycle, with enterprise business operations accounting for more than 80% of the total energy consumption, comprising energy demanding assets and utility operations, but most importantly occupants that realize business processes directly affecting enterprise business, as well as energy performance.

Enterprise modelling, management and automation heavily relies on three interrelated spatiotemporal factors: enterprise assets and facilities, environmental conditions and occupant behaviour. Contemporary research and available technological solutions on enterprise modelling (or simulation) systems, are mostly asset-driven and fail to adequately capture the actual affect of occupants and respective occupancy patterns.

ECOBUILDING will attempt to develop a holistic approach that incorporates enterprise asset management, facility operations, business processes (and respective services) with occupancy patterns within enterprise premises. The ECOBUILDING framework, having as a central point of reference the occupancy behaviour (presence and movement) will align energy consumption points to all interrelated enterprise aspects (business processes, enterprise assets and utility state and operations). ECOBUILDING will develop an enhanced enterprise model that treats, learns and manages the enterprise environment as an intelligent agent, perceives the state of the environment using sensors and acts upon the environment using device controllers. The ECOBUILDING Semantic Model will also constitute a formal model for enterprise energy performance measuring, monitoring and optimization.
