The increase in average lifespan across the world has been accompanied by an unprecedented rise in the occurrence of dementia. In view of the staggering socioeconomic costs and the implications inflicted upon the quality of life and the care provided to the people affected by dementia, Dem@Care aims to enable enhanced diagnosis and promote independence by deepening the understanding of how the disease affects everyday life and behaviour.

To achieve this, Dem@Care will develop a multi-parametric closed-loop remote care solution that will afford adaptive, personalised feedback to the people with dementia, while at the same time providing clinicians with a comprehensive view of their health status and progress. A cohort of sensors (for monitoring daily activities, lifestyle patterns, speech impediments, state of mood, and vital signs) and intelligent decision making, constitute Dem@Care’s key enabling technologies that will allow to alleviate the subjectivity of current clinical practises, while accounting for the complexity and heterogeneity of the disease. Pilots of successively increasing duration, carried out in collaboration with regional clinics, residential care centres and health councils, will form the basis for clinical validation and evaluation, as well as for the assessment of quality aspects, including usability, acceptability, safety, etc.
