CRYPTOACTION

CryptoACTION represents Europe’s most ambitious attempt to date to equip Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) with mission-appropriate tools for investigating Cryptocurrency-Facilitated Crime and Terrorism (CFCT) — including money laundering and darknet marketplaces — to improve investigation operations and external collaboration workflows, and to provide comprehensive training curricula for LEAs, prosecutors and the judiciary, alongside the world’s first cryptorange. The project delivers an ecosystem of independent but interoperable lawful-investigation tools with AI co-piloting capabilities that enhance investigator efficiency and support the intelligent correlation of blockchain data, structured data from anti-CFCT databases, and text, audio and visual modalities stemming from lawful surveillance and darknet/deepnet/clearnet scraping. CryptoACTION addresses technologies that hinder investigations — such as TOR, mixers, and DEXs— both head-on and laterally, taking advantage of design/implementation vulnerabilities and human errors on the side of criminals. Consortium LEAs co-design and help validate the tools and support wider engagement through collaborative capacity-building workshops. Embracing the seven EU principles of trustworthy AI, the project moves away from black-box cryptocurrency-analysis tools towards tools that explain their results, including any assumptions and uncertainties.

ITI/CERTH, as the leader of Work Package 5 (Inter-tool Collaboration, Copiloting, Hybrid Intelligence – WP5), plays a central role in transforming the project’s stand-alone cryptocurrency-analysis tools into a highly interoperable, collaboration-centric ecosystem, and in integrating advanced AI — including Large Language Models (LLMs) — to enable next-generation, AI-assisted investigation interfaces. Beyond leading WP5, ITI/CERTH is responsible for the overall technical and scientific coordination of the project and chairs the Legal and Ethics Board (LEB). It leads the development of Generative AI tool enhancements, copilot functionality and hybrid intelligence and contributes to the delivery of the final multimodal, intelligent anti-CFCT tools, as well as to requirements gathering, landscape analysis and the co-design and validation activities across the project.
