The COGITO project aims to speed up the digitalisation of lean construction as a stepping stone towards the industrialisation of the construction sector (” Construction 4.0″). The COGITO solution comprises: (1) an interoperable Digital Twin platform for semantic and pragmatic alignment with services; (2) reality capture tools that collect real-time data about the actual state and progress of the construction site; (3) multi-source data stream pre-processing services that manage and semantically annotate big data streams (e.g. drones, satellite images) to retrieve information about the actual status of the site and the resources and workers involved; (4) adaptive workflow management for visual progress monitoring and optimal flow of information to relevant stakeholders; (5) a Health & Safety service that analyses the nD BIM to pinpoint hazards and perform real-time alerting to prevent accidents; (6) a Geometric and Visual Quality Control service that performs automated quality checks by comparing as-is with as-designed BIM elements to detect geometric and visual defects; (7) a Digital Twin GUI that renders the site 3D model, including static (as-designed BIM), quasi-static (as-built BIM) and dynamic information (e.g. asset, machinery and people locations); and (8) on-site guidance applications that issue alerts to crews with information relevant to their allocated tasks. The COGITO toolbox will be demonstrated in one lab facility in Austria and two real construction sites in Spain and Denmark, while standardisation activities will be carried out by two partners with strong links to the most important international standardisation bodies in this domain.

ITI-CERTH contributes to COGITO with its expertise in computer vision, 2D/3D image and video processing, 3D capture and registration, object, activity and context recognition, visual analytics, machine learning and VR/AR technologies. In this context, it supports the development of the project’s services for processing reality capture data from the construction site, for automated geometric and visual quality control and for the 3D visualisation of the Digital Twin, also making available the CERTH-ITI Virtual and Augmented Reality Lab, which serves as a reference facility for the development and demonstration of applications in 3D visualisation, multimodal interaction and localisation.
