The goal of the AI4EU project is the development of a comprehensive European Artificial Intelligence (AI) platform, able to be used “on-demand” by actors in research and commercial projects. The platform aims at providing AI solutions to commercial, industrial and social sectors, offering access to knowledge, algorithms and tools for the development, deployment and funding of innovative applications. The ultimate goal is the support of an ecosystem consisting of researchers, innovators, SMEs, large corporations, students, etc., around a common access point to AI services. These goals will be achieved through three main pillars: a) the creation of a European AI community, involving users of multiple sectors, such as scientists, developers, SMEs, leaders in AI technologies, teachers/students, governments, societal organizations, non-profit organizations, AI groups and public citizens; b) the implementation of a platform for easy and comprehensive access to AI services, designed to be: accessible through web services, multi-disciplinary, scalable, interoperable, respecting data protection and privacy, collaborative, ensuring IPR protection and promoting transparency and reusability; c) research and development of innovative AI methods, that are explainable, verifiable, collaborative, integrative, while they address real-world applications, subject to uncertainty, limited data availability and limited computational resources.

Within AI4EU, ITI is responsible for the implementation and deployment of the AI4IoT pilot application of the AI4EU platform, towards effective monitoring and analysis of air quality for medical applications. The pilot application will make use of AI and data analytics methods in order to analyze air quality data, and effectively monitor air quality, measure pollution effects, predict future states and effects to human condition, visualize data and analysis results, and assist authorities in taking preventive actions. Data collection will be performed by a network of sensors (Internet of Things) that measure CO2, SO2 and dust particle levels, in combination with data from weather forecasts, satellite data from the Copernicus service, and data from mobile telecommunication networks.
