INESC PORTO is a private, non-profit association, affiliated to the University of Porto and dedicated to research, technological development and advanced training in information technologies and telecommunications. The Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit is composed of about 50 researchers and is organized in R&D groups whose activities may be divided in three main areas: Audio Processing, Image and Video Processing, Network Architectures and Advanced Communication Services. The Unit has a large experience of R&D projects in the framework of European programs (RACE, ESPRIT, ACTS), national programs funded by government agencies as well as industrial contracts.
Relevant to SCHEMA is the current research in distributed multimedia applications, digital television, transmission of audio-visual information over narrowband and broadband networks, and low bit rate video coding. Important results have been achieved recently in European projects (ATLANTIC - Advanced Television at Low bit rates And Networked Transmission over Integrated Communication systems; SCALAR – Scaleable Architectures with Hardware Extensions for Low Bitrate Variable Bandwidth Real-time Video-communication), national projects (VIDION – Digital Video On Line; CORAL - COntent-aware Resource ALlocation for digital TV service) and industry funded projects (ORBIT – Object Re-configurable Broadcast Infrastructure Trial, funded by BBC). INESC is member of the MOUMIR (MOdels for Unified Multimedia Information Retrieval) Research Training Network, where is leading the work in database interface and is participating on the video analysis tasks.
